VeriSign to Raise .COM & .NET Prices

verisign-logo.jpgVeriSign has recently announced that they will be raising .COM and .NET annual fees as of July 1st, 2010. ICANN has an agreement that VeriSign is allowed to raise their .COM fees by up to 7% per year. VeriSign took advantage of this in the first two years of its contract, raising .COM registration from $6.00 to $6.86. It was assumed that VeriSign would increase its prices every year to maximize profits, but it did not in 2009.

Paris wants a .paris

The TLD for France is .fr.

The Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, began a campaign on behalf of Paris, on December 9th 2009, to support the .paris TLD request.

Google gets into the URL-shrinking biz with Goo.gl

goo.gl.pngGoogle ventured into new territory this week with the launch of a new URL-shortening service it’s calling Goo.gl.

Unlike some existing and high-profile shorteners such as TinyURL and Bit.ly, Goo.gl is not a general-purpose link shrinker that users can access by going to a standalone site. Instead, it’s been built into Google products, beginning with Google’s browser toolbar and its Feedburner RSS service. Both of those services can now create shortened Goo.gl URLs that link to the source content while using fewer characters. This is especially important for sharing on places like Twitter, where there are size limits.

Announcement Regarding Implementation of Modification to Implementation Rules for UDRP

icann-logo.pngThe ICANN Board approved a modification to the Implementation Rules for the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (“Rules”). The modified Rules now require UDRP claimants and respondents to provide documents to UDRP Providers in electronic form. The modified Rules also change UDRP Provider obligations in forwarding hard copy notice to respondents in UDRP proceedings: the original Rules required Providers to forward a hard copy of the UDRP complaint; under the new Rules, Providers do not have to forward a hard copy of the entire complaint. Providers are now only required to forward a hard copy notice that a UDRP complaint has been filed.  
The modified Rules will become mandatory for all UDRP proceedings filed on or after 1 March 2010.

China to apply for .?? ‘Zhongguo’ domain name

chinaflag.pngChina Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) today will apply for the top-level Chinese domain name “Zhongguo”(written in pinyin), to key Internet oversight agency the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), www.people.com.cn reported Global netizens may be able to log on to the Internet with the new domain at the beginning of next year at the earliest, according to reports.

Egypt launches Arabic web domain


egyptflag.pngEgypt will open the world’s first Arabic language internet domain, its communications minister has said.

Tarek Kamel said the new domain name would be “.masr” written in the Arabic alphabet. It translates as “.Egypt”.

“It is a great moment for us… The internet now speaks Arabic,” Mr Kamel said.

IDN ccTLD Fast Track Process Launch

 
icann-logo.png16 November 2009,  ICANN is pleased to announce the launch of the IDN ccTLD Track Process.

Non-English speakers across the globe will soon  have access to the Internet addresses completely in their own lanuage.  The Internet Corportation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization charged with overseeing the Internet’s naming and numbering systems, is today launching a process for delegating a number of internationalized top-level domains.
