It’s very easy to find yourself in a rut. As humans, we tend to favor the familiar and comfortable. We find our favorites and stick with them, especially if we’ve hit our saturation point. For example, how many blogs do you read? Personally, I am subscribed to more than 100, although I will admit I can’t keep up with all of them. I have hit my saturation point. It is very difficult for a new blog to catch my attention enough that I would be willing to add them. Because of this, it is very easy for me to stick with the known. This situation can be applied to more than just blogs, it can be news in general, music, social media and more. When it’s new, we seek out more and more to add. At first, we can’t get enough, but then you hit that point where you just can’t keep adding without ignoring what you already have.
So how do you break out of this complacency and keep finding new while balancing the known? For me I like to seek out differing opinions and articles or sites that aren’t necessarily relevant to our industry. The more seemingly incongruous, the better. You never know when something seemingly random will spark a new idea or way of doing something. After all, who would’ve thought LEGOS could have anything to do with leadership?
